Nice stuff! If you haven't already checked it out, you might enjoy number9dream by David Mitchell, a novel that contains (among many other things) the fictitious journal of a doomed kaiten pilot.

I am REALLY enjoying the pages and the photography, and I'm not even sure how I ended up here! Amber answered one question I had, and that was why they didn't put the observation post on the high point. I've never been to Japan, other than passing through one of the airports, and I feel like I've now been to these places. Great work. Thanks for posting for others to enjoy.

Amber- You live near here? Wow. As we were leaving the place we walked through the little cluster of houses on the land-bridge and went by a blonde woman walking a dog. We said `hello` but that was it. Was that you, or do you know that person?
Anyway- no we didn`t climb the mountain. The thought crossed my mind but it was cold and we had no idea what might be up there. Do you have photos of the lookout? I`d love to see them- if you could email me them at outofruins @ hotmail.com that would be awesome. Cheers!

Hi there....I actually live about five minutes walk from this place. My family and I go here almost weekly on our "family walks." We only knew that it was WWII ruin, but never exactly what it was used for. Normally there are many fisherman out here... Did you climb the mountain? There is a lookout on top. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your page.....

David- Thanks, I`m glad the article resonated, especially because it`s such a great haikyo from such a serious time in world history. I didn`t want to get the tone wrong.

Dave- Thanks, and as I said to David above- glad I didn`t mess up the tone.

A sad history, but an interesting haikyo and a very good article. The photos capture the lonely, impersonal feeling you describe.
